External wall insulation is generally exempt from planning permission under Irish exempted development rules. However, there are exceptions: if your home is a protected structure, in an Architectural Conservation Area, is an apartment or duplex, or if the insulation changes the building line or exceeds certain thicknesses. If you live in a semi-detached or terraced house, your neighbour's consent is not required, but the finish must be sympathetic.
